Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when the couple transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
