Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
