European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
