Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned the transfer ban they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to identify the nature of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
